Practical Cycles was founded in 2008 and now occupies 100 square metres of commercial warehousing that is filled with the finest range of Cargo Bikes, Child Transportation Bikes and accessories!

The inspiration for Practical Cycles grew out of our fortunate visits to many of the world’s great cycling cities - such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Portland - Oregon, San Francisco, Seattle and Cambridge. As a lifelong lover of all things two (and three) wheeled, visiting these cities opens your eyes to the humble simplicity of getting from A to B by bike. The amount of Cargo and Child Transportation bikes in these cities demonstrates that it is possible to do almost anything by bike.

Today we have a comprehensive range of Cargo Bikes, Child Transportation Bikes and WorkBikes borne out of our experience of riding them. Our range of demonstrationCargo Bikes is unrivalled here in the UK - you can see and ride Cargo Bikes from Bakfiets, Nihola, Babboe, Dutch ID, Circe, Yuba, Xtracycle, Surly, Zigo and 8 Freight all in one place!

The range of bikes continues to grow with Trikes being of particular importance in enticing the less confident riders into using the car less and cycling more…Riders of all ages, abilities and levels of confidence are welcome at Practical Cycles. Whilst we are in business we are not here to just sell any bike, we like to see people ride away on a bike that is exactly suited to their needs. This is a common cliché in bike shops but with us we mean it – we aren’t afraid to recommend a cheaper option if it is more appropriate for a customer’s needs.

We also specialise in custom built wheels – particularly those with internal gear hubs, dynamo hubs, drum and roller brakes. Our Alf Webb trained and qualified wheelbuilder artfully crafts hubs from Sturmey Archer, Shimano, Rohloff, Nuvinci and others into wheels that will last and last.

Our mantra is simply that, "you can do more by bike and do even more by cargo bike" - so go on, we dare you!
