Exhibitor Profile: Streetstepper
In May 2004, with support from his Austrian brothers and father, the first prototype of the Streetstepper was developed in the family run wood turner's work shop. It was in the form of a bike made from ash wood, which was propelled by step pedals. Initial test runs proved that gears with a changeable transmission ratio using the pedals were necessary.
It took a mere three months to create a prototype with variable transmission ratio gears (a gradient gear box!). In November that year, Firma Graditech Entwicklungs GmbH was founded; two prototypes were then developed to aid in the research of ergonomics and gear mechanism.
The following year saw the invention of the cam-disk-gear which made the unrestricted characteristic of the transmission ratio possible, and soon after the creator went into partnership with mountain bike manufacturer Hot Chili & D.A.R.T. in Schorndof near Stuttgart in preparation for serial production. This necessitated the development of prototypes similar to serial line versions, and in September 2006 the "Bodybuddy" Streetstepper was presented to the general public at the Eurobike Exhibition in Friedrichshafen.
Streetstepper later won the international ISPO brandnew Award as most innovative Summer-Outdoor-Apparatus. Development then started on the Streetstepper model 09, a sportier version of the Streetstepper which, in addition to the automatic cam-disk-gear is equipped with 3 gears.
It was just over a year ago that the Streetstepper model 09 was presented to the general public at the Eurobike Exhibition in Friedrichshafen.
