Road bikes and Racers : Touring

Touring bikes are characterised by all-day-every-day levels of comfort and feature sturdy frames, bomb proof wheels, wide range gears and powerful brakes all designed to cope with hauling a full set of panniers up hill and down dale for many thousands of miles without complaint. Dropped bars offer a variety of hand positions for comfort but unlike out and out road bikes they aren't for speed as such, more for simply minimising the slog of grinding into an all-day headwind.

The design features which allow them to withstand fully loaded touring miles - stability, luggage capacity, control - make them great shopping bikes. Their comfort levels allow them to devour commuting miles with ease. And their durability lets them survive the daily knocks and scrapes sufered by town bikes.

Although sales of traditional touring bikes were hit hard, and permanently, by the introduction of mountain bikes for many riders Touring bikes remain the ultimate do-everything bike.
